The Origin and Symbolism of the WELSH LOVESPOON
The custom of giving Lovespoons originated in Wales, probably as early as the sixteenth century. The Lovespoon seems to have developed from the 'cawl' (Welsh broth or soup) spoon. Traditionary, young men would fashion intricately carved wooden spoons and present them to their sweethearts, hopefully to influence a relationship. Hence the word 'spooning'. The spoons come in a variety of shapes and sizes and generally have a symbolic meaning.

FLOWER - Gentleness and Growth
DIAMOND SHAPE - Good fortune
VINE / LEAVES - Long and furitful life

SHIELD - Safekeeping
LOCK - Safekeeping
HORSESHOE - Good Luck
CELTIC CROSS - Faith or Wales
BIRDS - Lovebirds or Doves of Peace
     DRAGON - Welsh National emblem / strength
