The Mike Davies Lovespoon Collection
The Origin and Symbolism of the WELSH LOVESPOON
The custom of giving Lovespoons originated in Wales, probably as early as the sixteenth century. The Lovespoon seems to have developed from the 'cawl' (Welsh broth or soup) spoon. Traditionary, young men would fashion intricately carved wooden spoons and present them to their sweethearts, hopefully to influence a relationship. Hence the word 'spooning'. The spoons come in a variety of shapes and sizes and generally have a symbolic meaning.
Here are a few symbols: -
HEART - Love and Affection
CHAIN LINKS - Loyalty / Faithfulness
TRAPPED BALL - Number of Children
FLOWER - Gentleness and Growth
DIAMOND SHAPE - Good fortune
VINE / LEAVES - Long and furitful life
ANCHOR - Desire to settle down
SHIELD - Safekeeping
HORSESHOE - Good Luck
BIRDS - Lovebirds or Doves of Peace
DRAGON - Welsh National emblem / strength
Today, Lovespoons are given for all occasions, Births, Christenings, Engagements, Weddings, Anniversaries or just a gift of Love and Affection.
